Overview:

The Business Development Manager will work within the central marketing department and combine strategic advice with a hands on role to develop convincing, high quality pitch responses within deadlines.

The Business Development Manager will create and develop appropriate content and key messages that are focused on client requirements and on improving Clyde & Co's chances of success. This will often mean working alongside practice area business development managers.

Principal Accountabilities:
The role involves project management of all stages of the pitch process including establishing and maintaining templates and precedent material, researching key opportunities, stop/go analysis, identification of client requirements, pitch strategy, pricing, influencing choice of pitch team, document writing and rehearsals through to obtaining direct feedback and post-pitch debriefs.
 
There will also be an opportunity to contribute to strategic projects for the firm such as practice development, competitor law firm intelligence and general management projects. Other responsibilities will include business planning, identifying potential business opportunities and expanding existing business.
  • Manage and provide strategic advice to partners across the firm on all stages of the pitch process from client targeting initiatives through to writing tender responses, coaching partners through presentations and obtaining feedback from (prospective) clients
  • Establish best practice in relation to researching targets, collecting and accessing core information, establishing processes, introducing templates, pricing 
  • Ensuring that deadlines for all pitches are met
  • Ensuring that best practice is pursued in relation to business development opportunities including scoping of opportunities, pricing, client feedback and follow-up
  • Methodically providing a commercial approach to pitches and business development activities
  • Maintaining a pitch library and tracking process

Main Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain the infrastructure and precedent material in order to facilitate effective and efficient responses to business development opportunities
  • Provide informal coaching and training to partners on all aspects of selling/business development
  • Carry out client and practice area analysis and competitor research to support the firm’s partner away-day and other high-level projects
    Identify cross-selling opportunities within the firm and reading the business and legal press to alert partners to any business opportunities
  • Provide guidance and support to other members of the wider Marketing/BD team on the best approach to business development

Candidate Specification:

  • Significant experience of providing pitch, CRM or research support (preferably) in a professional services/legal environment
  • Proficient in client and market research
  • Sound knowledge of commercial/business environment and why/how clients buy legal services
  • The ability to work to very tight deadlines under pressure; the ability to assimilate details quickly
  • Strong project management skills
  • Team player. Ability to lead and motivate others
  • Confidence to work at all levels within the organisation (up to Board level)
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team 

Qualification:

  • Strong academic track record and good university degree
  • Relevant marketing qualification desirable

Competenies:

  • High standard of writing and copy editing including excellent command of English grammar and language
  • Confidence and diplomacy. Ability to persuade and influence senior individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including oral and written communications, persuasiveness, diplomacy, tenacity.
  • Excellent IT skills including PowerPoint, Excel, Word,
  • Strong business research skills and a high level of commercial awareness
  • Organised and able to run projects concurrently to tight deadlines
