The Team

We are currently seeking a Library Services Manager in our Toronto office. Reporting to the Canadian Library Services Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the management and operation of the Toronto library team. 

The Role

Operations and Resource Management

  • Direct supervision of staff including mentoring and coaching as well as maintaining standards of performance and evaluation of staff
  • Conduct high level reference work and legal research including competitive intelligence, marketing and business development research
  • Market information resources and services both formally and informally through communications, publications and presentations in conjunction with the national library team
  • Participate in investigating new resources and provide access to print and electronic information resources in conjunction with the national library team
  • Monitor licensing and contractual commitments with publishers and vendors on a regional basis
  • Effectively manage electronic resources and troubleshoot operational challenges
  • Work with the Library Services Director to oversee special projects related to library infrastructure, current awareness and library presence on the firm’s intranet

Information Services

  • Analyze various requests to determine information needs using standard legal and business reference materials in both print and online
  • Work closely with the Toronto research lawyers to provide research support and materials
  • Ensure lawyers are kept current with new developments through the delivery of specific alerting services such as media monitoring and legislative updates
  • Direct the delivery of professional information resources to firm clients when requested
  • Provide assistance with the ongoing development of the firm’s SharePoint intranet for library
  • Participate and support specific Knowledge Management initiatives within the firm

Administrative

  • Support national strategic and business plans for the library in conjunction with the firm’s goals
  • Liaise with the Library Services Director, KM director and other regional and global librarians
  • Prepare annual regional budget and collaborate with Library Services Director and fellow managers on national budget
  • Assist in the maintenance of cost-effective, lawyer valued information services that are aligned with the strategic direction of the firm and practice areas

 

Skills and Experience Required

  • Masters Degree in library science or combination of education and experience with law libraries and information science
  • 10 years of combined information services and progressive management experience in a law library
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to lead while participating in collaborative decision making and team projects
  • Familiarity with legal library environments and management technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff and budgets
  • Strong knowledge of legal and business resources both print and online
  • Creative and innovative thinker who seeks new or reinventing opportunities
