The Role

We are seeking to recruit an ambitious and capable Solicitor or Legal Executive (NQ-2 years PQE) to join our busy and highly regarded Construction & Infrastructure team based in our Exeter office. You will report directly to the Partners and play an integral part in a variety of both contentious and non-contentious construction law matters. Working with a wide range of clients across the UK on all types of construction and engineering projects, you are likely to be involved in large commercial and residential development projects and disputes. Our clients include a broad range of developers, main contractors, sub-contractors and consultants, as well as public bodies and funders. You can expect to work collaboratively with colleagues across the Construction & Infrastructure department, as well as other teams such as Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial, in order to ensure that each client receives an exemplary service.

Our work includes advising on, drafting and negotiating construction contract documentation (schedules of amendments to standard form contracts (JCT, NEC, IChemE), consultants’ appointments, collateral warranties, bonds and PCGs) and the resolution of construction disputes by way of adjudication, mediation, arbitration and litigation. The role will initially involve both non-contentious and contentious work but with an early opportunity to specialise in either field. Applications are also welcome from anyone who already has a particular preference for dispute resolution or transactional construction work.

We consider it essential to enable our solicitors to gain experience and confidence in working directly with clients, which will enhance your development as a lawyer. Whilst we will provide training on any specialist areas which are new to you, we expect you will have gained some experience of construction transactions and disputes, and be enthusiastic to expand your skills and knowledge. We pride ourselves on our ability to develop our people, and you will be given early responsibility and client contact within a supportive environment. The department also benefit from having their own Professional Support Lawyer.

About You

An excellent communicator with proven technical and organisational skills and a cooperative team player, you will be accustomed to working under pressure to meet deadlines. With an eye for detail, you are meticulous and thorough in your work and are already accustomed to assisting in larger and more complex transactions in your current role, as well as advising clients directly on more routine matters. You will already have a firm grounding in construction law and have gained some experience on the JCT and NEC suites of contracts as well as industry standard forms of professional appointments, and additionally, you may have gained some experience in matters involving third party funders.
