The Opportunity:

This is a rare opportunity to join Ashurst's Pro Bono & Social Impact team and be seconded in a paid role to one of the firm's pro-bono clients (a refugee organisation) in Brisbane for a period of 12 months. More details follow.

  • While on secondment, this role will be supported by the Ashurst Pro Bono and Social Impact team
  • This will be a 12 month fixed term contract
  • The ideal level is 1-2 years PQE
  • Full time candidates only
  • Brisbane based candidates only
  • You must be able to work from client's office

Skills and experience required:

  • An enthusiastic professional who enjoys providing high quality legal services to migrants,refugees and asylum seekers
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people who are Culturally andLinguistically Diverse and who experience several layers of disadvantage
  • Ability to providing high-quality discrete legal assistance and representation services, both bytelephone and face-to-face in the area of immigration and refugee law, including to clients withcomplex legal needs
  • Ability to providing referrals to other service providers, where appropriate
  • Experience in managing a significant caseload of client matters, ensuring service standards and deadlinesare met
  • Ability to identify and appropriately respond to the cultural needs and/or vulnerabilities ofthe client's clients
  • Ability to comply with the rules and requirements of relevant legal profession legislation and theCommunity Legal Centre's Risk Management Guide
  • Ability to manage legal data and documentation, including:
    • Maintaining files effectively in accordance with the client's file management policies and RiskManagement Guide
    • Ensuring that all required legal service data is accurately and timely recorded in the client'spractice management tool, CLASS
    • Adhering to the client's digital processes to ensure supervision of legal services is completed
    • Assessing client's vulnerabilities and legal case merits to determine eligibility forrepresentation services
  • Ability to maintain up to date file lists and record of legal deadlines in the client's systems
  • Actively participating in regular file reviews and caseworkers' team meetingsand attending external supervision and/or debriefings
  • Ability to supervise own legal services with random supervisions provided
  • Ability to contribute to the preparation and delivery of community legal education sessions andmaterials, as required.
  • Ability to participate in the preparation of law reform submissions and responses to law reformproposals.
  • Ability to contribute to the day-to-day supervision of paralegals and volunteers
  • Ability to supervise volunteer advisors at evening advice sessions and/or at legal clinics
  • Ability to exercise self-care and identify strategies to cope in situations of stress and pressure, aswell as proactively managing own workload
  • You should have a current practising certificate or the ability to get one quickly
  • Applicants must have the right to live and work in Australia
