The Ashurst Projects & Energy Transition group is a global team focussed on supporting this transition by providing strategic partnerships to governments and industry participants. Through advising the full range of market participants in multiple jurisdictions around the world we have developed a strong understanding of the market overall and are able to provide an holistic offering. Our people have deep knowledge of industry sectors such as energy and resources (including renewables and green hydrogen), transport, social infrastructure, financing and the digital economy, allowing us to provide innovative insights to help our clients overcome commercial challenges and achieve a competitive advantage.

In EMEA, our Projects & Energy Transition group operates as an integrated team from offices in London, Paris, Milan, Frankfurt, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah and Riyadh. From our Middle East offices we have delivered unprecedented growth over the last 10 years and continue to act on some of the most high profile and innovative transactions anywhere in the world.

Job overview

The successful candidate would play a key role in the continued expansion of the Project & Energy Transition group in our Dubai and Abu Dhabi offices. This represents an exciting opportunity to be part of a developing, strategic projects practice with plenty of scope for personal and career development.

You will work closely with high calibre clients and colleagues in the Middle East and other offices in our global PET team.

Main tasks and qualities:

  • You will handle a broad range of project contract matters (including concessions and construction contracts) relating to the development of energy and infrastructure projects;
  • You will take day to day responsibility for the progression of complex matters. You will be able to demonstrate well-developed drafting and negotiating skills; and supervise more junior members of the team;
  • You will have excellent attention to detail, identifying inconsistencies that indicate problems with quality of work or a misunderstanding of clients' needs;
  • You will have a desire to build client relationships and develop your own internal and external networks with support and guidance from the partners and wider team; and
  • You will be expected to liaise closely with colleagues, clients, counterparties and other advisers. You would be working as part of a committed team that is a leader in its field of practice. All members of the team have frequent client contact and must be willing to travel.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong academic background;
  • Mid / Senior level lawyer with experience from a top tier law firm;
  • Strong general project contract and construction experience;
  • Familiarity with and experience of project finance structures and reviewing or drafting project documents from a bankability perspective;
  • Enthusiasm to innovate and play a part in building Ashurst's PET offering in the Middle East;
  • An adaptable person who is a fast learner;
  • A team-player who can work effectively with colleagues at all levels;
  • A great communicator;
  • Client facing experience and the ability to understand and respond effectively to client needs;
  • Experience of negotiating with counterparts; and
  • A commercial approach.
