The Ashurst Intellectual Property and Media team is a high performance team with a reputation for attracting cutting edge work for clients leading their fields. We are unique in that we offer the full range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property and media law from within the one group.

We act on Australia's most significant IP and media disputes, including those in the trade mark, copyright, patent, designs, trade secrets, defamation, tech, online safety, and advertising and consumer law spaces. We also act on a diverse range of other IP and media work including strategic advice, trade mark prosecution, complex projects and commercial transactions and media regulatory work. We work across industry sectors, but with a particular focus on retail and manufacturing, media and digital, life sciences and energy and resources.

Our team is busy and growing, and as a result are looking for a mid-level IP lawyer to join our team and work with the four partners in Sydney. On a day to day basis you will be:

  • Acting in a range of IP and media disputes including trade marks, copyright, patents, trade secrets, defamation, tech, online safety, and advertising and consumer law spaces
  • Advising on trade mark prosecution and related matters, including clearance searches, advising on adverse reports, collating evidence of use, negotiating trade mark consent, co-existence and settlement arrangements and preparing trade mark agreements e.g. assignments, licences
  • Conducting patent infringement and revocation cases in the Patent Office and Federal Court and trade mark opposition and removal actions in the Trade Marks Office, trade mark infringement and cancellation proceedings in the Federal Court
  • Advising on ancillary areas such as regulation and advertising of food and beverage products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, domain name disputes
  • Advising on complex project and commercial transactions including drafting, reviewing and negotiating IP and media provisions in infrastructure projects, energy transition projects, undertaking IP due diligence in M&A projects
  • Media work includes negotiating major rights, advising on television and film production arrangements, and advising on media regulatory issues, compliance with digital content requirements and submissions to media reform.

About you:

We are looking for a bright, proactive and ambitious lawyer who is passionate about quality and expertise and who is driven to working hard to progress their career with:

  • 2-4 years' IP and/or media law experience.
  • Experience in broad range of contentious and non-contentious IP and/or media matters, which could include experience in IP disputes, trade mark prosecutions, and/or commercial matters.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • An ability to work independently, as well as strong team and collaboration skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with well-developed analytical skills.
  • A proactive, positive and energetic approach, a strong work ethic and a commitment to providing technically excellent work and high quality service.
