The Business Support Services department consists of a number of teams which provide key administrative support services to the firm, including Personal Assistants, Document Production Specialists, Administrators and Reprographics (Print, mailroom and archiving).

Rise to the Challenge

The team leader is responsible for assisting the Business Support Services Senior Manager to maintain the highest level of customer service to internal and external stakeholders through effective leadership and development of employees. The team leader plays a key role in the continuous improvement of the service provided and should demonstrate a pro-active, positive and professional approach.

This is a people management role which involves ensuring a productive workflow within an environment that encourages personal and professional growth. The role works in collaboration with team leaders in our other offices and business areas to ensure optimal service across the whole function, for example redirecting resources to assist in other areas according to business needs.

This is a hands-on role and involves working alongside the team to deliver the overall service.

As a department 'coach', the team leader assists in staff development by guiding employees to achieve positive business outcomes and be successful in their role. Like all effective coaches the team leader should motivate, advise, give feedback, be supportive and provide direction.

Key responsibilities

This role includes, but is not limited to -

  • Oversee the day to day running of Business Support Services teams and functions
  • Build relationships with the departments lawyers to understand work types and proactively manage peaks and troughs in work flows
  • Encourage a strong customer service environment and ensure that all processes reflect this
  • Complete the performance review process for the team, including identifying and managing areas of development, setting objectives and regular one to ones throughout the year
  • Complete the recruitment and induction for new team members in your own team and support recruitment for your colleagues
  • Participate in training new staff and with the continued development of existing staff
  • Monitor and ensure staff compliance with established procedures i.e. operational processes, quality control procedures, conduct, attire, performance and attendance with the support of our HR team and / or the Senior Manager where necessary
  • Challenge current ways of working and identify improvements to ensure we operate efficiently and in line with best practice
  • Be available to travel to our other offices to support training, recruitment and work commitments
  • Play an active role in supporting change taking place in the firm and participate in relevant projects
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and utilised
  • Be aware of and responsible for the day to day health and safety requirements for your team and working area and immediately raise any health and safety concerns to your manager
  • Any other reasonable request made by your line manager

Preferred skill set requirements:

  • Experience working in a legal firm
  • Knowledge of reprographics / print and post
  • Work within a customer service environment

In December 2020 we donated a total of £40,000 to our four regional office charities, with each charity receiving £10,000 towards the causes colleagues support throughout the year. The donations went towards providing vital services after a particularly challenging year. Our current selected charity in Bristol is Great Western Air Ambulance.

  • Each lawyer has the opportunity to undertake pro bono legal work for local charities and not-for-profit organisations. This has seen colleagues support the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (Bristol), St Werburgh's City Farm (Bristol) and Moseley Road Swimming Baths (Birmingham).
