Learn from the best

Our Litigation, Regulatory and Public Law team is a market leader in the health, social care and local government sectors and continues to grow its profile and client base in the financial services, commercial, and higher education sectors. The team sits within the Litigation, Advisory & Regulatory department which deals with substantial commercial, regulatory and public law disputes (including Judicial Reviews), as well as complex advisory work including around public law decision making and regulatory considerations. The team primarily acts for public bodies such as local authorities, health trusts, regulators, oversight bodies, statutory bodies, and we also act for higher education institutions and corporates.

In joining our growing team, you will have the opportunity to work for a number of the firm's key strategic clients and a range of partner leads and colleagues, whilst managing your own caseload. Given the nature of our clients the cases on which we work regularly touch on live socio-economic or political issues whether that be within local government, health, higher education or financial services; often raising novel issues. We find that our work is highly rewarding as a result. We have strong and trusted partnerships with the clients we work with who genuinely value our support and tell us so.

The team wholeheartedly embrace hybrid working with each colleague having flexibility to self-determine what works for them. A new partner joined the team on 1 November and the firm has just set an exciting and ambitious strategic growth plan for the next 5 years, which means there is significant opportunity to support career progression for the right candidate.

Rise to the Challenge

We are recruiting a solicitor (2-4PQE) to join our busy and diverse litigation, advisory and regulatory team working for a range of predominantly public sector clients, with a focus on higher education, local government and health. The successful candidate will be involved in:

  • Advising on public law decision making including on ensuring that decisions are taken properly in accordance with the law and any relevant internal rules or policy.
  • Acting on Judicial Review proceedings, including drafting pre-action correspondence and summary grounds.
  • Advising on complaints and other disputes arising out of the exercise of clients' functions.
  • Advising on the risk of challenge and defending claims under the Equalities Act.
  • Advising on procedural steps of litigation in the County and High Court in those areas through to trial.
  • Representing clients involved in ADR, including mediations and other forms of local dispute resolution.
  • Instructing and working with counsel and experts.

Experience of acting for or an interest in public bodies or higher education institutions including on student related matters would be advantageous. The successful candidate will work with partners and associates on business development, so an interest in supporting business development activities and initiatives would be beneficial.

Work-life Balance

We offer a substantial benefits package to all employees, which includes 25 days holiday (plus the option to buy up to an additional 5 days), a generous pension scheme and private medical insurance through Vitality (including "phone a GP service", discounted gym membership and 'Vitality' Partner discounts).

All of our people are entitled to a biannual private health assessment through Nuffield Health and are included in the group life assurance scheme. We also have an Employee Assistance Programme (free telephone support and counselling service) and a cycle scheme (Save Tax & NI on a bike for cycling to work).

Where possible, we want to offer all Bevan Brittan people flexibility to work their week in a way that suits them - we operate a hybrid working model based on the needs of our clients, teams and that of the individual. Our core business hours are 9am - 5:15pm Monday to Friday, however we are open to individuals working more flexibly around those times and would welcome a conversation with you if you have any questions.

Responsible Business

To us, being a responsible business is second nature; a core part of Bevan Brittan's identity, running through our culture and embodied by the clients we serve.

Bevan Brittan seeks to play an active role within its local office communities. Through regular fundraising events, support for local initiatives and annual charity donations at Christmas, we have established a culture of giving within the firm. In December 2021 we donated a total of £60,000 to our four regional office charities, with each charity receiving £15,000 to help fund their vital services.

We want to demonstrate our commitment to these causes through actions rather than words; colleagues from across the firm are already heavily involved, living and breathing the four pillars of our Responsible Business strategy:

  • Community Engagement
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
  • Wellbeing

Collectively, these four pillars ensure we look after our colleagues' wellbeing; offer an environment in which all can progress on merit, regardless of personal circumstances or background; give something back to the communities in which we work; and protect the environment.

Bevan Brittan is proudly a carbon neutral firm. We have achieved the UN's Climate Neutral Now accreditation and our environmental sustainability plan is focussed on achieving our net zero carbon target.

Each lawyer has the opportunity to undertake pro bono legal work for local charities and not-for-profit organisations. This has seen colleagues support the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (Bristol), Moseley Road Swimming Baths (Birmingham), Yorkshire Cat Rescue (Leeds), Great Western Credit Union (London), and several others.
