We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate or Senior Associate to join the Commercial and Infrastructure Department to focus on advising our local and central government clients primarily on governance and administrative law matters. The role will also include elements of commercial work.

You will be joining a highly respected team who are at the forefront of local authority innovation (and who work in a collegiate way) and that regularly advises on award winning projects, high profile issues, and complex governance and vires matters. The team is experienced in all local authority work and supports colleagues across the firm.

The team has an exceptional reputation being ranked number 1 in Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 directories.

The team is involved in interesting and innovative work which is wide-ranging and includes governance, vires, ethical standards, constitutions and policy frameworks, inquiries and investigations, senior officer disciplinary, commercial projects, complex outsourcing and partnership working, joint ventures, and state subsidy to name a few. The team operate within a range of disciplines often working alongside colleagues with in-depth specialisms, for example in employment, litigation, housing, education, health and social care, IT, transport and waste.

The team's client base is diverse and includes local authorities, central government and agencies, combined authorities, police and fire, housing associations, wholly owned companies, and private sector.

Rise to the Challenge

You will advise on and be involved in developing solutions to governance issues across the whole spectrum from vires to decision making and constitutions.

You will have a good amount of client contact, the opportunity to be involved in business development activities, responsibility appropriate to your knowledge and expertise, and you will assist the team in the delivery of complex projects and transactions to both public and private sector clients.

Additionally you will advise upon and draft documentation on shared services, alternative delivery vehicles (including companies and limited liability partnerships), devolution and reorganisation, and cross sector collaboration between public bodies.

What we are looking for from you

For this role we are looking for you to demonstrate at least 5 years PQE with direct experience of advising local authorities on governance and commercial issues, and a clear understanding of how public sector bodies work. Experience as a Monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer, and advising at the most senior levels within local authorities, is desirable. Experience of advising on state subsidy (formerly state aid) is desirable but not essential.

You will have excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively. Strong technical skills and an ability to quickly understand and work through complex issues is essential to the role, and the ability to operate with a high level of self-sufficiency is important.

Experience of or ability to work in a team coordinating advice with other fee earners as well as liaising effectively with clients to build and maintain relationships is important.
