Our Employment, Pensions and Immigration team continues to be a market leader in the health and social care and local government sectors whilst growing its profile and client base in some of our emerging markets including the insurance and finance, commercial, education and housing sectors.

The team sits within the Litigation, Advisory & Regulatory department which deals with substantial commercial and regulatory disputes. The Employment team primarily act for employers, including national and multi-national organisations, supporting them to improve their employment practices and manage workforce issues, as well as defending employment litigation and seeking to mitigate risks for clients.

Rise to the Challenge

We are looking for an Associate to join us, based in our Bristol, Birmingham or Leeds offices. Working as part of a national team, you will have the opportunity to support a diverse range of national and regional based clients across the range of sectors in which we work.

The depth and breadth of the markets in which we operate will provide the opportunity and flexibility to work on novel and complex employment law issues across both contentious and non-contentious matters. There is also scope to develop expertise in immigration and/or pensions work, if of interest.

It is envisaged that you would manage your own caseload whilst working with a number of our partner leads and colleagues across all 4 of our offices but with a focus on advice to Local Authorities and Central Government clients.

You would be advising on employer relations matters including internal disciplinary/grievance/capability processes, reviewing policies and procedures and contracts, advising on equalities obligations, conduct of and/or support on Employment Tribunals, advising on TUPE processes including inputting into drafting of commercial agreements as well as delivering training on a broad range of employment issues and supporting business development.

With approximately 100 new litigation instructions every year, our Employment team's litigation experience is second to none. Whether in the Tribunal, the EAT, the Court of Appeal or the High Court you will have the chance to be involved in ground-breaking employment litigation.

What we are looking for from you

The successful candidate will be involved in providing sound, commercial employment advice and would have the following skill set/experience:

  • A range of contentious and non-contentious employment experience, ideally gained across one or more of our key markets, including local government, financial services, general commercial, higher education, housing, health and social care (NHS or independent)
  • Case management of ET claims (either managing your own caseload or supporting on more complex matters) including drafting pleadings, witness statements
  • Advising on employer relations issues grievance, disciplinary matters and settlement negotiations
  • Equal Opportunities

  • Contractual advice
  • Advising on restructures/redundancy processes/TUPE
  • Undertaking transactional due diligence, often as part of a wider corporate or commercial transaction
  • Good client management skills and an interest in business development
