The Role

The Civil Litigation Law Clerk role consists of providing specialized legal support services by being involved in litigation matters for a wide variety of clients, though principally insurers. The Civil Litigation Law Clerk helps to manage these matters by assisting a busy team of lawyers with the study and legal analysis of cases, drafting formal notices, pleadings, agreements on the conduct of proceedings, and by managing physical and electronic case file documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and organize new files;
  • Prepare Liability and Damages Briefs;
  • Contact clients to obtain documents;
  • Liaise with client to arrange for attendance of representative at examinations for discovery;
  • Contact opposing counsel to obtain productions;
  • Prepare Affidavits of Documents with proficiency in both paper and electronic formats;
  • Proficiency with e-discovery techniques and best practices;
  • Follow up with client and other parties for answers to Undertakings;
  • Summarize liability and medical records in narrativeform;
  • Diarize file for next steps, reports, undertakings;
  • Trial preparation assistance, as needed;
  • Preparation of Cost Outlines and/or Bills of Costs
  • Maintain client bordereaux;
  • Other duties, as business needs demand.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • ILCO Certification/Law Clerk diploma or equivalent academic credentials;
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in civil litigation;
  • Solid knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure;
  • Impeccable English grammar with excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong work ethic;
  • Exceptional organization, prioritization and time management skills;
  • Superior multi-tasking, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills;
  • Communicating in a professional manner with lawyers and other team members;
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel; Office Suite, an asset;
  • Proficiency with a variety of litigation management software, including but not limited to Caselines and Nextpoint;
  • Annual chargeable hours target of 1400;
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team with strong sense of collaboration and positive, «can-do» attitude.
