The Team

The UK Early Careers (EC) team are at the forefront of innovation and passionately recruit, as well as develop the future talent of the firm. They are fast paced, forward thinking, fuelled by achieving success, delivering a best-in-class experience and a commitment to diversity.

The team sits within the wider HR department in the UK consists of over 100 people. We have specialist teams in Recruitment, Early Careers Recruitment and Development, Learning and Development, Operations, Systems and MI and Reward. The HR department are based in offices across the UK, working as one team to deliver a holistic service to our fee earning and business services groups.

The Role

To be located on either Manchester or London, you will spearhead the firm's development of trainee solicitors, apprentices and school-leavers. You will be encouraged to think creatively and be a true ambassador for the firm, working with key stakeholders leading on talent development strategies for the Early Careers population.

Key Responsibilities

You will have responsibility for

  • Overseeing all trainees through their training contract. This involves working
  • together with the Training Principal on Training Contract seat allocation (including overseas secondments), reviews and qualifications, as well as career counselling/ general support .
  • Working with our Casualty business on the qualification pathway via our newly developed Paralegal Academy and overseeing the participants on that pathway.
  • Partnering with the business and broader HR team to build an apprentice and early years career strategy using external & internal feedback to make data led decisions
  • Ensuring that our future trainees are kept regularly up to date with firm news and that issues surrounding the routes to admission are managed effectively.
  • Reporting on graduate recruitment statistics to the Management Board for firm wide discussion.
  • Monitoring our competitors and ensur ing we are constantly improving our approach. Work ing with the Learning and Development team to organise the trainee induction programme and qualification course for all trainees.
  • Liaising with HR and Employee Relations on any issues .
  • Working with the practice groups and Knowledge Management lawyer s to develop the trainee training programme.
  • Keeping up to date on SRA regulations. Ensuring the firm is complian t with regulatory requirements and managing the relationship with University of Law as our training provider for the SQE .
  • Direct management of 4 team members and dotted line of an additional L&D team member
  • Undertaking any other tasks or responsibilities that reasonably fall within the remit of this position.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven managerial experience in Early Careers development, preferably within legal or professional services.
  • It would be beneficial to understand the SQE to help further develop our SQE approach & ensure compliance with the SRA regulations process.
  • Excellent client service orientation with first-rate communication skills and the ability to work with fee earners and staff at all levels.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills - ability to think critically and pro-actively with good judgment and problem solve.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and respond to multiple service requests, often while working under tight time constraints.
  • Strong influencing skills and be able to build credibility quickly with the ability to inspire confidence and respect at all levels.
  • Experience of managing and motivating direct reports.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment across HR and the wider firm.
