Clyde & Co is Tier One for Insurance in Australia as ranked by both Legal500 and Chambers & Partners. Our Melbourne partners are on the lookout for an insurance litigation lawyer with 5-6 years post qualification experience.

About the role

The role is broad and will involve you working across a range of contentious insurance matters including in general insurance, life insurance, professional indemnity, financial lines, directors' and officers' coverage and defence work, medical indemnity, personal injury, public and products liability, regulatory and indemnity advice. The client base is wide and includes acting for all major Australian insurers and many international insurance underwriters.

We are open to hearing from people with extensive insurance litigation backgrounds. The size of some of the litigious matters means you will be joining a supportive and collaborative team environment and you will work closely with other offices, therefore sharing of knowledge, team inclusion, accountability and a track record of success as a team player are key requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Legal Expertise: Assisting the Partners and other team members on a range of complex and large-scale matters, including but not limited to:
    • Defence of directors' and officers' liability and professional indemnity insurance claims, defeding claims involving large construction projects, product and public liability claims, multi-party litigation, class actions
  • Team: Working with and delegating to junior lawyers and willingness to help partners/special counsel manage the team and foster team work.
  • Client Management: Liaising directly with regional and global clients and that you will be able to build a trusted adviser relationship. We will support you to be actively involved in business development work.
  • Supervising Discovery: Established in the managing of e-discovery and electronic data collection in the context of large litigation. Oversight of large scale doc review to elicit key information, and effectively guide juniors and processes.
  • Communication: Clear and efective communication is essential, both in conveying legal advice to clients and in netotiating with opposing parties.

Candidate profile

Suitable candidates will be Australian or dual qualified and have experience gained in an international or leading national firm.

  • 5-6 years PQE which is ideally insurance litigation experience
  • Prior experience working on litigation matters and defeding claims in all courts and tribunals in Australia, and a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Commercial awareness and confidence in building a rapport with clients to gain a better understanding of their business' needs and with the assistance of the partner, actively developing these client relationships.
  • A keen interest in professional development, and confidence to assist develop client relationships.
  • The desire to contribute and thrive in a high performing team environment.
