Associate (3-5years PQE) - Trade and Energy
Disputes Team - London office
We are looking for an Associate to join our Trade and
Energy Disputes Team to be based in our London office.
The Team
Acting for some of the world's largest commodity and
natural resources companies, specialising in trading disputes (both
litigation and arbitration) and advisory work in relation to a wide
range of international trading issues including anti-bribery,
corruption, anti-money laundering and compliance and sanctions.
As well as engaging in international arbitration and
commercial litigation in relations to the business activities of
these clients.
They also act for and against Governments in relation
to contractual issues, investment disputes and sovereign immunity.
The practice is recommended in various editions of the
legal directories Legal 500 and Chambers UK for commercial
litigation, international arbitration, public international law and commodities.
Notable cases, not limited to but including:
Acting for claimants in major commodity fraud of
USD300 million, the subject of proceedings before the English
court and other jurisdictions.
Acting for defendants in a fraud claim in USD700m
before the English Commercial Court.
Acting and leading internal investigations for
commodity companies on various aspects concerning their operations.
Acting in numerous LCIA and ICC arbitrations.
Acting for a leading international energy trading
company in international arbitration proceedings against an Indian
buyer in connection with that buyer's failure to perform a long
term coal supply contract entered into on amended SCoTA terms.
Acting for a leading international energy trading
company in international arbitration proceedings against an UAE
buyer in connection with that buyer's failure to perform a long
term coal supply contract entered into on amended SCoTA terms.
Acting for a leading international energy trading
company in multiple international arbitration proceedings in
connection with a supplier's failure to perform under a long term
offtake agreement for Kazakh crude oil and condensate and
ancillary financial arrangements.
Acting for a leading international energy trading
company in international arbitration proceedings in relation to a
dispute arising in connection with a joint venture for the
construction of an LPG plant in Kazakhstan.
Acting for a leading international energy trading
company in international arbitration proceedings against a
South-East European sovereign and a state owned oil refinery
arising out of a crude oil processing agreement.
Representing a South-East European state owned oil
trading and refining company in High Court proceedings against a
Chinese state owned oil trading company in relation to a long term
supply contract crude oil for the supply of crude oil.
Essential Skills & Experience
We are particularly looking to add to our team at the
Associate level who would be attracted by the broad nature of this
practice.
The successful candidate will, therefore, have a
minimum of 3-5 years PQE in commercial litigation and will display
excellent legal ability and initiative, strong technical skills as
well as confidence in managing and prioritising a full and varied
caseload. They will be a strong communicator with good attention to detail.
Ideally candidates will have contractual dispute
experience as well high court litigation and international
arbitration experience.
In addition, they will have excellent academics and a
willingness to learn and develop their knowledge and travel.

suitable candidates will be considered.
