The Role

Department: Energy, Marine and Natural Resources

Location: Guildford (flexibility to work up to 3 days from home and from our London office)

Role: Permanent

The Team

We specialise in dispute resolution and international arbitration in the energy, renewables international trading and shipping sector. Our clients include some of the biggest international energy companies, and commodity traders in the world. In addition to our mainstream energy work, we have a particular focus on offshore wind, carbon capture, biofuels and energy transition work. Some notable clients, matters and work types include:

  • Summary judgment in the Commercial Court in relation to non-delivery of a petrochemical cargo and recovery of a pre-payment (with various issues around FM and injunctive relief).
  • Back to back FOSFA arbitration for non-delivery/non-acceptance of a cargo of soyabeans after an accident leading to the arrest of the vessel onto which part of the cargo had been loaded.
  • Advising on a variety of trading disputes regarding issues such as shortage, contamination, non-payment and force majeure as well as advising on the drafting of trading contracts, particularly in relation to the sale/purchase of petrochemical products.
  • Advising on live trading issues, particularly around specification, rejection and battle of the forms issues.
  • Advising on live shipping issues relating to charterparty and bill of lading dispute, arrest etc.
  • Bespoke drafting of charterparties (particularly LNG) and off-take agreements.
  • Advising client in claims arising from collapse of Zenrock Commodities Trading Pte Limited including in regard to defending against assertion of pledge rights, claims under assignments and defending bank's challenge of a set-off agreement. Advising in regard to two banks claiming an assignment on the same chose in action.
  • Clients include TotalEnergies, Sinopec, INEOS, Unipec, Sinochem, Saudi Aramco, Mitsui & Co.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • The candidate will work within our Energy, Marine and Natural Resources group on both disputes and non-contentious work in the energy and renewables (, commodity trading and shipping sectors. The candidate will support the team on a broad spectrum of work but with a key focus on trading. Contractual and commercial dispute resolution experience is a requirement and contentious commodities trading work would be highly valued. In addition, experience (either contentious or non-contentious) in any of energy, renewables or shipping or construction would be a plus. The successful candidate will have qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England & Wales.
  • 4+ years post qualification contractual/commercial dispute resolution experience a requirement.
  • Strong academic background (minimum 2:1 or equivalent)
