About the role
We are looking for a Senior Associate level lawyer with between 6-8
years' post qualification experience to join our Singapore office. You
will be experienced in insurance matters acting on behalf of major
global insurers and reinsurers.
This opportunity involves working directly for Partner Nicholas
Sykes, ranked 5 Years running by Chambers and Partners, and listed as
a Leading Individual for Insurance (Singapore) in the Legal 500 Asia
Pacific guide. Nicholas has extensive experience across all areas of
insurance and reinsurance law. In this role you will assist the
Partner in advising clients on complex policy coverage issues and
quantum across a range of first-party business lines including
Property, Energy, Construction & Engineering and Business
Interruption Insurance.
The team advises clients based in Singapore, S.E. Asia, Japan and
South Korea, and also those in the London and European markets. You
will be exposed to a varied practice, and the nature and size of the
team will mean that you will be heavily involved in all aspects of
matters allowing you the autonomy and development opportunity to drive
and make a significant contribution to the matter outcome.
The successful candidate will be involved in the following work:
Advising clients on policy coverage issues and quantum across
various types of insurance, from mid-size losses to large and
complex claims.
Providing coverage advice on onshore and offshore renewable and
other energy projects and claims.
Providing coverage advice on onshore engineering and construction claims.
Advising and representing multinational corporations, insurance
and reinsurance companies in respect of Business Interruption and
DSU claims.
Drafting and reviewing policy wordings and providing advice on
areas of legal risk for clients.
Assisting the Partner in managing and building client
relationships, including assisting with business development
activities for key existing clients and new clients.
Mentoring and assisting with providing training to junior
associates in the team.
Candidate Profile
You will be an established senior level lawyer who enjoys working as
part of a diverse and collaborative team with the following skills and competencies:
Legally qualified in common law jurisdiction with between 6-8
years post qualification experience.
Based in Singapore (preferred).
Based overseas, particularly England and other common law
jurisdictions (highly regarded).
A strong general insurance background with significant experience
across:
Advising insurers and reinsurers on complex coverage issues;
Drafting and reviewing policy wordings;
Complex infrastructure and construction claims, with a
particular focus on energy sector (preferred);
Property & Energy Insurance matters, BI and CBI claims.
Deep understanding to assess quantum on recovery claims following losses.
A solid private practice background and exposure to some, or all
of the types of matters detailed above, gained from a reputable law firm.
A genuine desire to build on and expand your skillset within a
global law firm context.
You will need to demonstrate relevant experience, strong
academics, be self-driven, have excellent verbal and written
communication and time management skills, and the ability to manage
competing priorities effectively.
Enthusiasm to contribute to and foster a positive team atmosphere.
