POSITION OVERVIEW

An opportunity has arisen for a paralegal to join the Intellectual Property team of Kirkland & Ellis' Litigation practice. The Paralegal will work directly with the Partners and Associates on all client matters from pre-litigation through to trial, appeal and conclusion of proceedings. The paralegal will be responsible for the day-to-day management of cases including hearing preparation, document management, managing the flow of information and establishing best practice policies and procedures.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed as necessary.)

  • Coordination and filing of court briefs and related material.
  • Management and coordination of hearing logistics - trials, appeals and interim hearings.
  • Preparation of bundles, exhibits, appendices and pre-trial documents.
  • Document management including managing production processes, document reviews and document platforms.
  • Management of material received from clients, opposing parties, and third parties (hard copies, electronic data, physical evidence).
  • Responsible for case management in relation to documents and document management systems.
  • Undertake substantive research tasks including (but not limited to) patents, patent histories, life sciences and technology products.
  • Analyses documents and materials.
  • Checks legal cites for proper format, content and standing.
  • Interact with external entities such as: clients, government agencies, expert witnesses, consultants, other law firms, opposing parties, chambers and court personnel.
  • Communicates with and coordinates witnesses, consultants, experts, and barristers.
  • Assists team members in compiling material for business development, marketing, articles and pitches.
  • Develops best practice in the London office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Work Experience, Skills

  • Knowledge of filing documents with the High Court and the Civil Procedure Rules essential.
  • Past IP litigation experience and experience of patent litigation required.
  • Understanding of court procedures and trial logistics.
  • Ability to use initiative, anticipate needs, act without direction, asks questions.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise numerous tasks with competing demands and complete them under time constraints.
  • Willing to take risks, seek challenges, take over difficult or unconventional projects; can take on a project at any stage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff to provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with co-workers; work as a team to accomplish tasks and produce final work product.
  • Maintain positive contact with clients, attorneys and staff and observes confidentiality of client matters.
  • Work requires additional hours to perform the essential duties of the position.

Tools and Equipment

  • Standard office equipment to be used (phones, PC, laptop).
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the Adobe suite.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the UK and European Patent Office websites and some understanding of other patent offices ie. Unified Patents Court.
  • Understanding of the UK online High Court and Court of Appeal filing system.
  • Some understanding of e-bundling platforms.
