The Department

We have decades of experience looking after private and corporate clients. For this we have a multinational team which is equipped with all the cultural and linguistic fluency that our clients expect.

As well as advising on the full spectrum of UK immigration and nationality law, we also advise clients on their US immigration needs, providing comprehensive transatlantic immigration advice and services for companies, individuals and family offices.

Many of our clients also require advice for other key international locations. We are well accustomed to both the legal and cultural nuances involved when advising our clients around the world. With offices in London, Singapore and our association with Karas So LLP in Hong Kong, we are able to serve an international client base and provide integrated and innovative solutions.

We work closely with colleagues from around the firm, such as those who advise on Tax and Wealth Planning, Real Estate, Reputation Management and Family law to provide integrated and innovative solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to join the well-established and innovative team of non-contentious Knowledge Lawyers at Mishcon, with a focus on the Immigration team in the Private Department. Under the guidance of the Head Knowledge Lawyer (non-contentious), you will work closely with the Practice Group Leader as well as the other Partners and fee-earners within our renowned Immigration team. You will also collaborate with other Knowledge Lawyers within the Private Department, and across the firm and the Practice Transformation, Risk & Compliance, Knowledge Services and Business Development teams. Being part of the Knowledge team at Mishcon will place you at the heart of the firm's Vision to be technologically transformed, delivering knowledge for businesses of the future and shaping possibilities for our people and our clients.

In this role, which is central to driving success for the Immigration team in its offering to its clients, we will need you to:

  • Deliver the firm's knowledge strategy for the Immigration team.
  • Alongside our highly regarded Academy, co-ordinate, design, prepare and capture internal and client legal training (including online solutions where appropriate).
  • Collect, draft, maintain and update key precedents, know how, and client guides including with automated document assembly, following the firm's house style.
  • Monitor legal developments and emerging law across the areas of expertise covered by the Immigration team and provide horizon scanning updates to both our lawyers and clients.
  • Leverage knowledge and technology to develop business opportunities, add value to key client relationships, and to bring efficiencies to client service delivery.
  • Deliver content for the Department's communication strategy including client alerts and articles in other Mishcon and external publications, including the legal, trade and general press.
  • Provide targeted, strategic support to identify, leverage and - with the support of the BD team and fee-earners - implement new and emerging Business Development initiatives.
  • Manage the Immigration team's knowledge pages on the firm's intranet (Mishcon Knowledge) and other know how repositories.
  • Work with Risk & Compliance and the Partners to implement and embed best practice (Mq²) and risk management practices across the Immigration team and support in any statutory, regulatory and other risk management changes.
  • Respond to legal queries from fee-earners.
  • Other general Knowledge Lawyer duties.

Skills/Experience

  • Between 5-7 years post qualification experience.
  • Excellent technical skills, with experience gained working in comparable, renowned law firms with an international reach.
  • This role may suit a candidate who is currently fee-earning and looking to switch to a Knowledge Lawyer role, in addition to an established Knowledge Lawyer.
  • Experience of practising as an immigration lawyer and dealing with both private individuals as well as corporate clients would be strongly preferred.
  • Good understanding of our segment of the legal market, clients and competitors, and the challenges and opportunities the current landscape presents for both HNW/UHNW individuals and corporate clients in terms of global mobility.
  • Some experience of contributing to education, precedents, know how and knowledge commercialisation, including the ability to proactively leverage knowledge to develop business opportunities.
  • A great communicator, with the ability to translate between the technical and plain English both orally and in writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong organisational, prioritising and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage a busy and multifaceted workload.
  • Good teamwork and the ability to work independently with self-motivation.
  • Ability to embrace and promote new ways of working and aptitude to work with emerging legal technology.
  • Resilient and calm under pressure with an adaptable and flexible approach.
  • Proactive and takes initiative.
  • Sound operational knowledge of Microsoft programs.
