Job Title Associate (3-6 PQE) - Private Wealth & Tax - specialising in US/UK tax planning
Location London
Description

This is an exciting role that focusses on the delivery of complex UK tax and legal advice to U.S. connected individuals, trustees and family offices. Prior U.S. related experience is not a requirement - strong UK tax technical skills is a requirement. The role involves collaborative working with other groups and departments within the Firm.

The Department

The Private Wealth & Tax group works with a diverse range of institutions, companies and high net-worth individuals managing and protecting their assets in the most tax-efficient manner.

Many of the individuals we advise regularly are international, with personal wealth and business interests in numerous jurisdictions and sectors. They include professional fiduciaries and private trustees, both in the UK and all major international financial centres. They are often not resident in the UK, and many have never been resident or domiciled here. The tax issues they face are complex and varied. Nevertheless, the focus for all of our clients remains the same: preservation of their wealth for the benefit of their families and philanthropic endeavours.

Our clients want to comply with their UK and international tax reporting and payment obligations while maximising any available tax reliefs. They also want to preserve their privacy, protect their assets, realise value and safeguard their reputation and family values. We work with them to navigate and balance these potentially conflicting objectives, providing bespoke and tailored solutions for each specific situation.

We do this against a backdrop of a dynamic and increasingly regulated world. Based in London, Hong Kong and Singapore, with lawyers qualified in multiple countries and with significant experience advising across Europe, the Middle East, the US and Asia - we are well placed to support our clients with any tax issues. We advise on the formation, administration, taxation and governance of their structures, coordinating and working closely with local and international professional advisers, bankers and family offices.

Duties and Responsibilities

The role will involve advising on the UK side of US/UK and international tax, trusts; asset protection structuring; and lifetime planning for high-net and ultra-high net worth individuals, families, and their trustees.

Skills/Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years PQE with experience in private wealth and specialise in personal tax, trusts and international and domestic wealth planning.
  • Experience gained at a leading personal tax practice at a reputable law firm.
  • You will have strong knowledge of both onshore and offshore tax and have a comprehensive understanding of the law surrounding trusts and asset structuring in the UK and internationally.
  • Good technical knowledge in tax and wealth planning with competent drafting skills.
  • Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) is desirable.
  • Experience of the UK side of US/UK tax planning is desirable but absolutely not a pre-requisite.
  • Proactive and takes initiative.
  • Strong organisational and prioritising skills, in order to meet the demands of challenging and commercial internal and external clients, as well as dealing with competing priorities.
  • High standards of care and service in a professional manner.
  • The ability to build good relationships with clients, partners, fee earners and business operations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to meet the drafting and presentation aspects of the role.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Resilient and calm under pressure.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Adaptable, flexible with a common-sense approach.
  • Takes responsibility for and attends to self-developments.
  • Interest in undertaking business development activities both internally and externally.

Please note that this job profile is not an exhaustive list of duties but merely an outline of the key components of the role. You may be required by your line manager to take on additional responsibilities when requested.
