Mishcon de Reya is an independent law firm, which now employs more than 900 people with over 550 lawyers offering a wide range of legal services to companies and individuals.

Based in London and Singapore, the firm services an international community of clients and provides advice in situations where the constraints of geography often do not apply. The work it undertakes is cross-border, multi-jurisdictional and complex, spanning six core practice areas: Corporate; Dispute Resolution; Employment; Intellectual Property; Private; and Real Estate.

Mishcon de Reya has grown rapidly in recent years, showing more than 70% revenue growth in the past five years alone. In 2015, the firm moved into a purpose designed building on Kingsway, and has converted to both an alternative business structure and LLP.

The Department and The Role

In 2016, Mishcon de Reya laid out its 10 year vision. One of the key themes to the narrative is that the Firm must transform itself technologically to be fit for the 2020s. Central to this transformation is a need to revolutionise the practice of law at Mishcon - how our lawyers deliver legal services - by remodelling legal processes, automating some elements of them and by applying next generation technology to enable our lawyers to work better and faster for the benefit of our clients.

Over the past 4 years, we have begun to deliver on our practice of law transformation agenda. This role will accelerate the agenda and drive forward the work over the coming years.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Head of Practice Transformation will:

•Work with Practice Leaders and their teams, as well as the Directors of various Business Operations functions (Knowledge, Business Development, Strategy, Data, Technology etc) across the Firm to identify a pipeline of opportunities to transform the practice of law at Mishcon.

•Build out a team – comprising practitioners and domain experts - capable of delivering against a portfolio of such opportunities.

•Take overall leadership of the portfolio of projects and initiatives which together help us transform the Practice of Law at Mishcon and report to the Board on progress as required.

•For each individual project, work with specific individuals in the relevant Practice (e.g. lawyers, PSLs, paralegals, PAs) as well as the Firm's Strategy, Technology and Data teams to ensure that we do the following (as needed):

  • map out the 'as-is' and 'to-be' ways of working and identify opportunities for efficiency gains through process improvements, including automation and digitisation.
  • clarify user requirements for new technology solutions and assess internal and external tools against those requirements; where relevant, create business requirements for new technology that we choose to develop.
  • identify opportunities to systematically improve data capture across the Firm in order to drive more data-driven decision making and to enable the Firm to leverage its emerging data science capabilities.
  • roll out improved ways of working (including new technology solutions, where relevant), with associated communications and training, to ensure behaviour change is effective, with particular focus on getting both grass roots and senior leadership support for change.

•Work with the MDR LAB team to identify those early stage legal technology companies we want to track and to drive target companies through the funnel to LAB participation.

•Work with the MDR Ventures team on new business ventures which involve practice of law.


The role can be moulded to the right person. The ideal candidate will:

•Have trained and/or practiced as a lawyer or have previous exposure to working in a law firm.

•Know how a law firm works, and recognise that there are significant opportunities for improving operational effectiveness in the practice of law.

•Be able to work with and influence senior members of the Firm, including Practice Leaders, Division Heads and Directors of Business Operations, as well as lawyers within of the Firm at all levels.

•Have deep interest and non-technical expertise in legal technology (engineering skills not required).

•Be analytical, inquisitive and highly structured; be data driven and highly proficient with Excel.

•Be able to work in a fast-paced manner, continuously juggling multiple projects.

•Excellent attention to detail.

•Excellent organisational skills.

•Ability to effectively manage own workload.

•Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels.

•Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

•Personable and confident, able to build relationships with partners/ key stakeholders.
