We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and self-motivated lawyer to join our Australian General Counsel and Compliance team. Reporting directly to the Australian Head of Risk & General Counsel this role is part of the senior team responsible for the overall operation of the firm's Australian general counsel, risk management and compliance function.

The key responsibilities and requirements for this role are as follows:

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with oversight of the firm's engagement terms with our clients, including reviewing proposed departures from the firm's standard engagement terms, and reviewing and advising on engagement terms proposed by clients/prospective clients.
  • Supporting periodic review of the firm's risk management manual, and risk management policies and practice standards, and in their implementation, including secondments, political donations, whistleblowing, external appointments, securities dealing, privacy, information security, insider dealing, anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering and workplace health & safety.
  • Assisting with oversight of the firm's supplier contract policy, including with due diligence in respect of prospective suppliers and review of proposed supply terms.
  • Reviewing and negotiating various agreements required from time to time to support our legal practice and/or operations, including non-disclosure agreements, escrow agreements, reliance and non-reliance agreements and secondment agreements.
  • Developing and delivering risk management and compliance training to both lawyers and non-legal staff, including training in respect of our policies and practice standards.
  • Helping partners and other lawyers with their compliance with their professional duties under the Legal Profession Uniform Law and other regulatory obligations.
  • Supporting with the provision of secretarial services in respect of our Risk Committee, and Board meetings of the firm's associated companies, including assisting to set the agendas for, and producing Minutes of, those meetings.
  • Participating in and advising on special projects from time to time.

Requirements

  • Experience working as a General Counsel in a law firm or inhouse legal team.
  • Experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements.
  • The ability to persuade, influence and build relationships with all stakeholders, including senior management, partners, business services heads and counterparts in our other offices globally.
  • Working knowledge of project management and process improvement methodologies.
  • Strong written, drafting, verbal communication and presentation skills
