The Team

We are looking for an experienced risk and compliance lawyer to join Norton Rose Fulbright's EMEA Risk and Compliance Team ("the R&C Team").The R&C Team is led out of London by a Chief Compliance Officer ("CCO"), who works closely with EMEA's Chief Risk & Regulatory Officer.

Our CCO is assisted by lawyers, officers and other staff who are based in various locations in the UK, Middle East and Asia, including a Head of Risk & Compliance of Europe (based in London) and a Head of Risk & Compliance of Asia and the Middle East (based in Singapore).

The R&C Team supports the business across 22 offices throughout EMEA. Its primary roles are to (a) assess and advise on risk and (b) ensure the firm complies with a broad range of regulatory and professional obligations, in order to safeguard the firm's reputation and avoid penalties. The R&C Team also works closely with the business in order to achieve the firm's global strategic initiatives.

The Role

The successful candidate will be based in the firm's Dubai office and will report to the Head of Risk & Compliance of Asia and the Middle East, and on UAE aspects, to the Dubai office's managing partner.

Your work will be internally focused, supporting the firm's partners across EMEA, as in-house advisor. Some international travel may be required once current travel restrictions are lifted.

The role will involve work across a broad range of risk management and compliance issues, including:

  • Providing high quality senior level advice to partners, other fee earners and R & C Team colleagues, predominantly in relation to client onboarding, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, risk management and reporting issues.
  • Assisting and liaising with the compliance teams at Norton Rose Fulbright's fellow Member Firms, based in Australia, Canada, USA and South Africa, mostly in relation to potential conflicts of interest.
  • Supporting the CCO by being an escalation point and supervising junior R&C members on higher risk and more complex compliance and risk management issues.
  • Reviewing engagement and relationship letters, panel appointments and non-disclosure agreements produced by clients, and advising as to their acceptability.
  • Monitoring and reviewing the usage and wording of the firm's standard engagement terms.
  • Providing senior level advice to partners, fee earners and R&C Team members on compliance with applicable anti-money laundering, counter terrorist funding, sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption laws, insider dealing and other regulatory matters.
  • Advising on directorships and trusteeships, arbitral appointments and other ad hoc risk management and compliance queries.
  • Taking the lead in devising and rolling out risk and compliance training across the firm.
  • Supporting Dubai's local money laundering reporting officer regarding reporting obligations and related regulatory matters.
  • Supporting Dubai's practice standards partner regarding professional obligations and conduct.
  • Assisting partners and fee earners with their professional duties and other regulatory obligations.
  • Reviewing and updating the firm's risk management policies and procedures.
  • Managing and mentoring more junior members of the R&C Team.
  • Monitoring the development of compliance obligations in relevant jurisdictions in EMEA.
  • Supporting the CCO on other risk management and compliance projects as required.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Be a UK qualified solicitor or qualified in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, South Africa or the United States.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years' experience of working as a fee earner in a commercial law firm or in the regulatory area in a similar international legal practice.
  • Be highly intelligent and have excellent commercial judgement.
  • Have strong communication skills with experience of operating in a multi cultural environment.
  • Have sufficient influencing skills to work successfully and confidently at all levels including with senior management and partners.
  • Be sufficiently confident to exercise risk based judgement calls on a daily basis.
  • Be fully conversant with the lawyer's primary duties as to confidentiality and client care.
