The role

RPC combines a market-leading Tax Disputes and Investigations practice with longstanding non-contentious expertise to offer a comprehensive service to UK and international clients. We offer advice on both tax disputes and tax advisory matters. Our specialist dedicated team comprises lawyers with a unique blend of regulatory and commercial experience.

We are seeking a talented tax litigator with 6+ years' PQE. There will be an interesting spread of contentious matters. The successful candidate will have a direct and indirect tax background and a strong interest in tax contentious work.

There will be opportunity to act on high profile matters. Recent highlights include:

  • Advised TSB in relation to a complex VAT dispute concerning the correct treatment of services provided to it under a transitional services agreement arising out of its split with Lloyds.
  • Acting for Newcastle United Football Club in relation to a multi-faceted dispute with HMRC stemming from an enquiry into agents' fees that started with a dawn raid.
  • Led on major litigation for Universal Cycles Limited concerning the application of anti-dumping duty following an investigation by the EU anti-fraud body, OLAF.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • C.6 years of PQE or equivalent relevant expertise.
  • Expertise in Tax Disputes and Investigations including experience in both direct and indirect tax matters, HMRC enquiries, COP8 and COP9 investigations and claims involving public law challenges by way of judicial review.
  • Delivers legal and commercial solutions, working collaboratively with clients and colleagues to provide an outstanding client experience.
  • Takes responsibility for managing and developing strong relationships with clients based on an understanding of their business objectives.
  • Committed to business development to further grow the practice. Identifies and shapes commercial opportunities encouraging others to participate.
  • Works efficiently and commercially and understands the importance of financial hygiene. Shares their understanding with the team.
  • Adopts a commercial mindset when pricing, resourcing and using technology to manage matters and understands the impact of this on profitability.
  • A collaborative leader within a team who coaches and develops junior team members to achieve their full potential.
