The team

RPC is seeking a Costs Lawyer/Draftsman to join our expanding, busy litigation practice.

Litigation is at the heart of RPC's business, and we know it inside out. At any one time more than half of our lawyers are handling complex large scale global disputes. With over 300 litigation lawyers to call upon, our team is capable of handling the most complex cases in any type of dispute.

We are creating a new role to support our Senior Associate Costs Lawyer in assisting Partners and Associates in all matters relating to costs. Our current process includes a combination of one dedicated Senior Costs Lawyer, RPC lawyers, paralegals, and outsourced providers.

The role

We are looking for another dedicated member of the costs team to assist our Senior Costs Lawyer to help bolster our in-house capability.

This is an opportunity for a forward-thinking individual to support and assist the delivery within the specialist and ever-developing area of costs litigation. This individual would work across a number of teams, with partners, associates and paralegals delivering costs services.

The work will be varied, interesting and challenging. Working alongside our existing Senior Cost Lawyer; you will work on a wide range of matters, with values ranging from tens of thousands of pounds to multi millions. The underlying work types include commercial disputes, professional negligence, medical claims, and property damage. In addition, you can expect to:

  • Prepare and submit claims for costs for assessment.
  • Negotiate successful settlements (both paying and receiving party).
  • Draft Bills for assessment by the court.
  • Prepare Costs Estimate and Schedules.
  • Liaise with and advise clients regarding their cost claims.
  • There will also be the opportunity to undertake advocacy at Costs and Case Management conferences and Detailed Assessment Hearings for interested candidates.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Qualified Costs Lawyer/Solicitor or Costs Draftsman (NQ - 4 years PQE) or equivalent relevant expertise. Experience of using Costs Master is advantageous.
  • Excellent knowledge of legal procedures.
  • Attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (both orally and in writing).
  • High level of confidentiality and integrity.
  • Works efficiently and commercially and understands the importance of financial hygiene.
  • Collaborative and works effectively in a team.
  • Committed to being part of a supportive, inclusive and collaborative firm culture.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and ideally a working knowledge of Costs Master.
