Travers Smith

Travers Smith is a leading City law firm. We build lasting relationships with clients across several sectors but with a particular focus on asset management and technology.

It is Travers Smith's purpose to provide the very highest quality of service to our clients whilst enabling our people to achieve professional fulfilment in a supportive, inclusive, and enjoyable working environment.

Competition Department

Highly experienced in merger control, investigations and litigation, we have wide-ranging and deep knowledge of this area. The advice we provide is underpinned by commercial insight into our clients' sectors and objectives, and a focus on clear communication.

We have recognised expertise in advising on the competition and regulatory implications of mergers and acquisitions, as well as the full range of behavioural UK and EU competition matters (abuse of dominance, cartels and other restrictive agreements, including regularly providing compliance advice).

We have significant experience of competition litigation before the English courts. We also advise on utilities regulation and other EU law matters, such as state aid and public procurement.

In addition to advising clients on EU and UK competition law, we regularly co-ordinate the provision of merger control and behavioural competition advice to clients in respect of other key jurisdictions around the world, in conjunction with leading overseas law firms.

In common with many Competition practices, we also advise clients on the potential impact of the UK National Security & Investment Act and overseas foreign direct investment regimes on their transactions.

The Role

To support the continued growth of the practice, we are currently recruiting an Associate to join the Competition Department on a permanent basis.

This role is an opportunity for the successful candidate to take on a significant amount of client contact and responsibility whilst working in a collaborative environment to provide advice and assistance to high quality clients across a wide range of matters.

You will also have significant opportunities to contribute to the wider activities of the Department, including in relation to Business Development as well as Learning & Development.

Key Responsibilities

While distribution of work will vary from time to time, it is our full expectation that a Competition Associate will gain experience across the full range of matters that make up the Department's practice. Typical work will therefore include the following.

Merger control, national security, and foreign investment

  • Advising on UK and EU merger control investigations and coordinating international merger control strategies.
  • Advising on the UK National Security & Investment Act and coordinating international foreign direct investment strategies.
  • Supporting the firm's Corporate Departments in relation to other competition law, merger control, national security and foreign investment matters arising on their transactions and client work.

Cartel and other investigations

  • Advising clients involved directly in UK and EU cartel and other investigations in relation to alleged anticompetitive conduct.
  • Coordinating international competition investigation matters.
  • Advising clients involved as interested third parties in cartel investigations and a wide range of other competition and market investigations.

Litigation

  • Acting for clients in connection with follow-on competition damages litigation before the English courts.
  • Advising clients in connection with standalone competition law disputes.

Advisory

  • Supporting clients with a wide range of UK and EU competition law advice on specific matters.
  • Providing clients with ongoing competition law training in relation to competition law compliance, dawn raids, and emerging trends relevant to their businesses.

Other areas

  • Advising clients in connection with public procurement and State Aid / UK subsidy control matters.
  • Assisting clients with other aspects of economic regulation, including in the utilities sectors.

Skills and Attributes

The candidate will be required to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • strong technical competence in advising on Competition law matters;
  • strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • an ability to be proactive, to plan work strategically with a view to prioritising key tasks, and to manage time;
  • a curious and entrepreneurial mind-set, identifying opportunities to improve and innovate in our delivery of work for clients; and
  • a collaborative attitude, operating as a "team player" and working effectively as part of a wider team.
