Travers Smith

An award-winning city law firm. We build lasting relationships with public and private sector clients. It is Travers Smith's purpose to provide the very highest quality of service to our clients whilst enabling our people to achieve professional fulfilment in a supportive, inclusive, and enjoyable working environment.

Department

We have one of the largest pensions law practices in the City. Whilst most of our department's clients are the trustees of large employers' occupational pension schemes, we also advise employers on pension matters and support, for example, corporate departments on the pensions aspects of all kinds of transactional work and the employment department on pensions matters such as automatic enrolment.

Our lawyers advise pension scheme clients on (among many other things) the legal aspects of pensions tax rules, funding requirements, insolvency and other protections, investment, discrimination, governance and administration.

These clients very commonly need advice on matters in which other departments of the firm specialise. We therefore have a "Pensions Sector" team, in which we work very closely with colleagues in most of the firm's other practice areas, including: investment funds, derivatives and structured products, financial services and markets, corporate finance, private equity, finance, tax, employment, outsourcing and commercial contracts, data protection and dispute resolution.???????

In corporate transactions, where there is a defined benefit pension scheme this is often a very significant issue. We are able to give clients strategic, as well as legal, advice in this scenario.

We have been advising some of the UK's largest defined benefit and defined contribution pension schemes and corporate sponsors on all aspects of pensions law and practice for over 35 years, including on investment, risk and liability management, contracts, funding and security, and disputes. Our clients include the trustees or corporate sponsors (including FTSE 100) of pension schemes with over £100 billion of assets in total. We have worked with many of our largest clients for over 20 years. We have a strong track record of collaborating with US and other firms to assist global clients in managing their pension risk worldwide, as well as advising on high-profile cross-border transactions.

We are a six Partner team, with two Consultants, three Senior Counsel, one Knowledge Counsel and 10+ Associates/Senior Associates. Along with Trainees, Paralegals, PA's and Legal Operations support.
